The insensitive subdivision of the Dragon Hill Farm into 4 titles rendered the Sustainable land management design inoperative. As a result the function of the land was removed and land management became difficult. A property owner wishing to revegatate their only grassed area with native plants for simplicity of management invited Eco-land Ltd to established 17000 native plants and created a subtropical orchard. A simple hand dug walk track system was also created.

Ecolands Kaeo

At Eco-lands we have be progressive transforming a rundown grazing block into a energy efficient, carbon neutral, diversified land based production unit. Sustainable Land Management Design is being implemented as time and resources enable. Most earth works are completed with water storage and storm retention ponds in place and access tracks formed. Many plantings have occurred, fruit orchards and timber forests being extended each year. Paddocks for livestock and open space are becoming more refined and maintained yearly. Regenerating native forest is being managed and worked to ensure a quality forest and ecological resource is available to future generation. Pest management is maintained to a level that locally present Kauri snail populations are maintained and enhanced.

Our eco-friendly self designed and built house is still to be completed. Most materials were sourced from the farm or local district. The timber was milled onsite and used in a rough sawn state. Rocks from the land have been included in the floor where possible to reduce the need for concrete and to store the suns heat. The house is dedicated to solar energy through design and solar panel modules. We have no grid power to site.

Our household at present is approx 60% self supported in food and uses 90% renewable energy for electricity. We are still developing an extensive garden and after 5 years of effort are starting to get life into otherwise dead soil.

Our transition from a run down grazing block to that of a diversified sustainable farm is slow and limited by finance but its enjoyable and rewarding at the same time. We cherish the fruit when it ripens on the tree and become inspired not to waste it or that of other farm produce. Our children grow as hunters and gathers within our garden and fruit trees. They grow with the ducklings, chickens, pigs, lambs and calves. They play with the horses, dogs and cat and chase the butterflies across the land without fear.
